First staged in 2019 with the support of the Queensland Government, Magic Round has been hosted exclusively in Brisbane and is one of the must-see events on the Australian sporting calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from across Australia and the Pacific and injecting over $30 million into the Queensland economy annually.
In 2024 Magic Round has been bolstered with the inclusion of Game One of the historic three-match Ampol Women’s State of Origin series between Queensland and New South Wales to be played on Thursday night. The four-day festival of Rugby League is expected to draw a record 200,000 fans to take in all the action.
To meet this demand and in the interests of providing attendees with the best possible fan experience, we have received Brisbane City Council approval to expand our event footprint onto a section of Caxton St during the Magic Round event window.
To accommodate this there will be a road closure in place from Friday, May 17 at 12:00pm until Monday 20 May at 3:00am on Caxton St, between Petrie Tce and Hale St (see Figure 1A & 1B). This Caxton St closure is separate and in addition to the Stadium’s Traffic Management Plan which will be in place for the Magic Round event days.
The Caxton St Fan Activation Zone will be used to provide free family-friendly entertainment and activities for attendees of the Magic Round fixtures, including interactive games, music, and fundraising initiatives for local junior rugby league clubs.
The Caxton St Fan Activation Zone (see Figure 2 overleaf) will be open at the following times:
- Friday, May 17 – 4:30pm to 7:00pm
- Saturday, May 18 – 12:00pm to 7:00pm
- Sunday, May 19 – 12:00pm to 6:00pm
Staff, signs and barriers will be in place to maintain the traffic restrictions during this closure. Road and lane closures and traffic diversions are shown on the maps overleaf.

What does this mean for residents?
The road closure has been structured in a way to minimise the impact on local residents and businesses. Other than the standard closures implemented by Queensland Police for the safe movement of pedestrians in peak times around the event, residents in the streets around Caxton Street will still have access to their properties throughout the three days.
Should you have any issue accessing your property, staff can provide direction at the closure points.
