Even with 11 rounds remaining in the NRL Telstra Premiership season, Friday night's opening match at 4 Pines Park shaped as a season-defining moment for the Sea Eagles and Wests Tigers.
The home side were coming off a bye and were desperate to find some consistency in the run home after going W-L-W-L-W-L-L in their past seven games.
Following this round's match, Benji's boys have now lost six on the bounce, even though a number of those losses have been close run things.
The action then headed to Newcastle for Friday's second game where a resurgent Knights outfit played host to the Raiders, who have given themselves a real shot at the club's second minor premiership.
The Knights now remain in the logjam of teams just outside the eight.

NRL Press Conference: Knights v Raiders - Round 17, 2025
Fulltime: The Raiders hold off the Knights late fightback to record a 22-18 win, their sixth straight, to move to the very top of the ladder. In the match, it looked like they were going to run again with it with a strong first half to lead 16-0, but Newcastle to their credit fought back gamely and were in the match until the end, but could not overhaul their deficit.
75th min: The Knights won't die wondering and Schiller has got his second try for the match, taking a line-ball pass out from Bradman Best. Gagai strikes true again and the scores are narrowed to 22-18 and it's game on!
Injury update: Ponga's issue is reported to be a foot injury which will require scans. The skipper will not return to the game.

Ponga leaves field after run down left edge
58th min: Unfortunately for the Knights, they are made to pay for a handling error while on the attack down field, with Strange picking up the loose ball and running downfield before hoiking the ball out to the left where Jed Stuart was there to collect it and run in for the Raiders. Fogarty converts for a 22-6 lead.
50th min: The Knights get their first points of the second half, going out to their left with James Schiller running through on the left edge. Ponga converts and Newcastle trail 16-6. The Raiders haven't been as sharp as they were in the opening half and the Knights have been good enough to capitalise.
Halftime: The Raiders took control in the first half and enjoy a 16-0 lead at the break.
28th min: Another clever offload and another try for the Raiders. A tryscorer himself, Sasagi is able to get a ball away as he is coming down in a tackle to Tom Starling who flings a quick pass out on the short side to Ethan Strange who jumps in to score. Fogarty slots another for 16-0.

Fulltime: After an underwhelming first half, the Sea Eagles came out of the block firing in the second and set themselves up for an important 28-10 win.
