Maroons coach Billy Slater has axed his captain Daly Cherry-Evans and handed the halfback duties to Tom Dearden as Queensland look to turn their fortune around in Ampol State of Origin Game Two.

Staring down the barrel of a second straight series loss after going down 18-6 at home in Game One, the Maroons have added Kurt Capewell, Corey Horsburgh, Jack Howarth and Ezra Mam to their 20-man squad while Cherry-Evans and Titans forward Beau Fermor were left out.

Cherry-Evans has played 26 Origins for Queensland and has captained his state since 2019, leading the Maroons to series victories in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

Of the new faces, Horsburgh has been in superb form for ladder leaders Canberra while the ever-reliable Capewell has starred at centre and second row for the high-flying Warriors.

Slater said the Maroons would announce their new captain on Tuesday.
