A host of Queensland Origin contenders squared off at AAMI Park when the Storm and Cowboys faced off in what should have been an even contest.
The fourth-placed Storm had Cameron Munster, Trent Loiero, Harry Grant and Xavier Coates in their corner, while Todd Payten's posse included Jeremiah Nanai, Tom Dearden and Reuben Cotter.
With Billy Slater naming his squad for Game Two on Monday, there is plenty of interest surrounding possible changes to the Maroons, with Dearden in the frame to start.
Friday's second game saw the Dolphins dominate the Dragons in Brisbane.
The Dragons came into the match having won back-to-back games over the Broncos and Knights and they were looking to keep the momentum going at Suncorp Stadium.
However, Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa, put paid to any thoughts of a contest, pulling the strings as the home side proved far too good for the visitors.

Dolphins: Round 14
Fulltime: A huge home win for the Dolphins who hit 50 for their biggest victory, securing a 56-6. Despite giving up a few penalties, they were dominant from the get-go, with strong performances across the park. Farnworth, Isaako, Lemuelu and Tabuai-Fidow all scored doubles in the 10 tries to one victory which catapulted them into the top eight. For the Dragons, they were not able to get out of first gear, and losing their winger Christian Tuipulotu coming off in the first half, forcing a backline reshuffle.
80th min: Farnworth becomes the fourth player to score a double for the Dolphins tonight, bookending a dominant performance with both the opening and closing tries of match. Isaako kicks the conversion for a 56-6 lead and tallies up 24 points in the game.
64th min: Finally some joy for the Dragons, with Holmes going over for their first try of the night. Holmes has been one of the better performers for the Dragons and gets a morsel of a reward. He can't quite convert his own try though, hitting the left upright. Score remains 50-6.

Valentine Holmes Try
59th min: And another one. This time back through the left side and back inside to Hammer for his second. The halves Katoa and Nikorima combine in the middle, it goes out left to Bostock who goes on a run then finds a trailing Tabuai-Fidow. Isaako converts again and the Phins hit 50.
56th min: The home side capitalise on their possession, with Isaako getting a ball that comes out from Katoa to Averillo to the wing, running in for another try. Isaako misses the kick and it's 44-2.
55th min: Katoa shows why he's impressing all and sundry as a young half, booting a 40/20 kick to exert more pressure on the Dragons.

Katoa nails a 40/20
Injury update: Reports from the Dragons that forward Raymond Faitala-Mariner has been experiencing shortness of breath, so he is off the field to be assessed. Max Plath is also off for the Dolphins with a knee issue.
46th min: Hammer hits the Dragons, finishing off a try set up by an opportunist and clever run from Jake Averillo, who targets makeshift centre Cook, slicing through the right-hand side, before finding Tabuai-Fidow who jogs in to add to the tally. Isaako converts for 40-2.
42nd min: The Dolphins pick up the pace again to start the second half, with Lemuelu getting a double after a Dragons error. New league convert Nathan Lawson is having a difficult night so far against a side hitting their straps, with some heavy defence on him forcing the ball free to give the Dolphins their attacking chance. Isaako converts to push the lead to 34-2.
Halftime: Once the Dolphins kicked into gear, they haven't let the Dragons have a sniff in this first half and go into the break with a deserved 28-2 lead. The Dolphins have a completion rate of 18/19 and have only made one error in comparison to five from the Dragons. However, their discipline has been an ongoing concern for coach Kristian Woolf and they they have given up six penalties to two.
38th min: Fantastic try! Dolphins winger Jack Bostock utilises his great height and produces a great leap to jump high over his opposing winger Nathan Lawson to bring down a Nikorima kick and score. Isaako converts again from the left hand side and it's 28-2.

By the hand of Hammer!
13th min: Phins are up and they go back-to-back with Isaako staying in by millimetres to score in the other side of the field. He converts his own try, with the ball hitting the left upright before going in. Dolphins lead 10-2.
11th min: Herbie Farnworth puts the home side in front, showing off his deceptive strength once more to fight his way over the line to touch the ball down. He cause a bit of a heart flutter to Dolphins fans after it looks like he hurt himself in that effort, but is playing on. Jamayne Isaako can't convert and it's a 4-2 ball game.

Fulltime: Despite a few patching moments, the Storm prove far too good and post a 38-14 win over the Cowboys who had their chances to strike, but could not convert their opportunities, making too many errors. Halfback Jahrome Hughes was the main orchestrator for the victory, scoring two first half tries to set his side on their way.

Storm v Cowboys – Round 14, 2025
79th min: Tyran Wishart puts the cherry on the sundae with another try to the Storm to blow out the scores. One more goal to Papenhuyzen for a game tally of 14 points. His conversion puts the Storm up 38-14.
74th min: Papenhuyzen adds to his points tally with a penalty goal.
Crowd update: 19,096 fans have made their way out to watch some rugby league in Melbourne tonight.
60th min: Big Nelson stops the rot for the Storm, barging his way over for another try for the home side. The Cowboys will be ruing their decision making, with Paulo doing all the hard work to come down with a high ball, only to offload in traffic, finding Harry Grant who sets his side on their way. Papenhuyzen converts and it's 30-14.
55th min: A great team try as the Cowboys go back-to-back, going from the left of the field where Zac Laybutt goes high to bat the ball backwards to and make its way out right with Purdue putting in a high, looping pass, with Robert Derby finishing it off for his team. Drinkwater can't covert and it's 24-14 to the Storm.
53rd min: The Cowboys have been spurred into action and off the back of some reinvigorated goal-line defence where they were able to repel some repeated raids, the visitors have their first try of the second half. Hooker Reece Robson has a run and produces an offload for a trailing Drinkwater, who puts on a show of stepping before crossing the line. He converts his own try and the Cowboys trail 28-10.
47th min: Hughes is over again - but can't get the ball down with Drinkwater wrapping him up. However, the Storm are successful with a captain's challenge, with Coen Hess making an early tackle, so they get more opportunity with the ball.
43rd min: The Storm pick up where they left off and are the first to score with Nick Meaney getting himself on the board. The Cowboys will be disappointed with the way they have started the second half after needing to aim up after the end to the first half. Papenhuyzen converts and it's 24-4.

Nick Meaney Try
Breakdown at the break: The try just before the halftime buzzer for the Storm will no doubt be a heart-breaker for the Cowboys who had otherwise done well to bring themselves back into their game. Possession (51 percent in favour of the Cowboys), completion rates (19/23 for the Storm and 17/23 for the Cowboys) and and errors (five for the Storm and seven for the Cowboys) are relatively even, but Melbourne's goal line defence and the skill of Hughes have proved to be the big difference at the break.

Jahrome Hughes 2nd Try
Halftime: The Storm have struck right on the break with Hughes getting his double. The Cowboys were looking the better of the sides in the second part of the half after letting in the first try, but the Storm can still do damage, even when playing below their best. Papenhuyzen converts again and for an 18-4 lead at the break.
21st min: And the Cowboys are on the board as well with their first try, getting a six again call to help them push their way to their attacking zone. Halfback Tom Dearden throws a looped cut-out pass to his left winger, with Jaxson Paulo going over. Scott Drinkwater can't add the extras and it's 12-4 to the home side.

Murray Taulagi and Jason Taumalolo remain at least a week away as they battle calf injuries, with Jaxson Paulo to line up on the wing.
Earlier in the week, Storm coach Craig Bellamy confirmed he would coach on in 2026.
