After a string of close losses, Dragons co-captain Clint Gutherson was happy to see his side’s luck change as they held on to upset the desperate Broncos 30-26 at Suncorp Stadium.
Gutherson produced the ultimate captain's knock with 233 run metres, two tries, eight tackle breaks and a match-saving tackle on a rampaging Payne Haas in the frantic final moments.

Gutho with a match-saving tackle
Having lost to the Rabbitohs, Eels and Warriors by one point and Wests Tigers by six, Gutherson felt the hard-fought win on Sunday was just reward for their efforts across the first 11 rounds.
“We've lost a few close ones this year, which has been disappointing and… it was a four-point game and we spoke about that so it was big,” Gutherson told NRL.com.
“Going into the bye, you always want to put your best foot forward and earn the week off.
“We probably let them back in the game the last few minutes which wasn't pleasing, but we won and that's all that matters.

Clinton Gutherson Try
“We spoke about how we've been playing good footy and losing and it can get disappointing sometimes, but you just got to stay in it.
“With a few minutes to go, we score and we have just got to get the ball back off the kick-off and we couldn't get do it and they just get a bit of a roll-on and we make it hard on ourselves.
“But as I said, you just want to win - it doesn't matter how you get the two points, especially this time of year, you just need a win. Around Origin, you lose players and people gain players, so a huge win for us.”

Clinton Gutherson 2nd Try
Brought to the club this year alongside fellow co-captain Damien Cook and 2016 premiership winner Valentine Holmes to provide experience and leadership, Gutherson was full of praise for the input of the team’s young crop of players who had emerged this year.
The club have had to blood a number of new faces this season after facing a rising injury toll and were again struck in the game against the Broncos with Dylan Egan suffering a suspected ACL injury.
Already, the side have lost Ryan Couchman for the year with an ACL, with a number of other players out for an extended period.
“Oh, it's hard … it's the dark side of rugby league, injuries and long-term injuries, but you have just got to get around each other and have a next man up sort of mentality,” Gutherson said.
“Dyl’s been really big for us and you never know, you can pray and put your fingers together, but it doesn't look good at the moment, but hopefully there's a bit of luck on his side …
“But it’s important to get around each other and make sure we're building and get around him as well.

“(We have blooded a number of new players) and things don’t change overnight, but in the off-season, we tried to knit together and build that sort of connection throughout the club and the young kids to the ‘old people’ as well, but Dyl’s been great for us, he's probably been our best player for the last month.
“Again it's sad, but next man up and there could be another young kid coming through and we just need to have his back and make sure we are able to get around him.
“We've got a lot of young kids in our team, we've got young halves, new hooker combination.
“It doesn't just change overnight and it takes games and we've just got to keep believing in the system that Flanno and the coaching staff have and I think we'll win more games than we're going to lose, but we have just got to keep being us and believe in the team we want to be.
“We're heading in the right direction, we're trending and it's all you can hope for and we just need the older guys to keep the young kids on track and we'll see what happens.”
