Broncos star Pat Carrigan has paid tribute to teammate Payne Haas' discipline as he balances his faith and his football during the month of Ramadan.
Having converted to Islam in 2019, Haas is observing a strict fast from dawn until sunset through until the end of March, meaning even water is off limits during daylight hours.
One of the NRL's premier big men, Haas has chalked up 331 metres from 35 runs across the first two rounds, astounding Carrigan with his ability to perform at an elite level without the usual amount of fuel in his body.
"The discipline and the way he goes about things outside of footy and getting his body right week in, week out to play and give his best performance for us shows what this group means to him," Carrigan said.
"It's definitely impressive for me to watch the discipline aspect - his dedication to his faith is important to him so it's important to us and he's special."

First look: Broncos v Cowboys
In the first-up win over the Roosters, Haas played the first 29 minutes straight before another 20-minute stint in the second half between the 50th and 70th minute.
In Canberra last weekend he was again interchanged after 29 minutes and then played the last 28 minutes straight as the Broncos tried to work their way back into the match.
Given how destructive the 25-year-old is when he's on the paddock, the temptation for new coach Michael Maguire could be to increase his game time substantially, but Carrigan is adamant quality over quantity is the way to go.

Remembering Carl Webb
"I'll back Madge in his approach to things," Carrigan said.
"It's key to remember it's a 27-round year for Payne with a few Origins thrown in and he's in Ramadan at the moment.
"Whatever minutes he does play they are always quality and he's massive for our team."
The Broncos go into Friday night's derby against the winless Cowboys as heavy favourites but Carrigan knows nothing can be taken for granted as last week's loss to the Raiders proved.
"I don't think form ever matters in these games, it's just who is willing to compete and want it the most," Carrigan said.
"Ever since I've been watching these games as a kid they've always been exciting.
"Carl Webb Medal this week and it means a lot to both clubs. It's a special night and both sides will be up for it."
