As it happened: Ponga supreme as Knights down Dolphins

Next week: The Knights chase a third straight win when they travel to the Gold Coast to face the Titans. The Dolphins will be hoping for a settled week in Redcliffe ahead of a Saturday night clash with Wests Tigers at Kayo Stadium.

Full-time: The Knights go 2-0 to start the season with fullback Kalyn Ponga again the star of the show with 201 run metres, five tackle breaks and three line breaks. Winger Greg Marzhew comes up with 10 tackle breaks and 209 run metres while Adam Elliott racks up 167 metres in his return to the side.

80 min: More desperation defence from the Knights as Kalyn Ponga and Bradman Best combine to bundle Jamayne Isaako over the sideline.

79 min: Kalyn Ponga again stands tall at the back as he comes across and knocks a grubber kick into touch to deny the Dolphins a shot at a late try. The Knights get Kai Pearce-Paul to make it 13 on 13 again.

71 min: A cold drop by Kalyn Ponga off a bomb opens the door for the Dolphins and they get a six-again call to pile on the pressure but the Knights' defence scrambles well to keep their line intact.

69 min: Knights back-rower Kai-Pearce Paul is placed on report and sent to the sin bin for a shoulder charge on Daniel Saifiti. 

67 min: Poor defence  by Mat Croker and Tyson Frizell allows Isaiya Katoa to slice through for the Dolphins' second try which Jamayne Isaako converts to make it 26-12.

66 min: The curse of the 'roll ball' penalty strikes the Knights when Tyson Frizell fails to make contact while playing the ball and is penalised.

61 min: Fletcher Sharpe explodes into space again and chips over the top of Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow but the Dolphins No.1 has too much speed and gets to the ball first.

58 min: The Dolphins get a six-again call and a chance to build pressure but a 'roll ball' penalty against Jeremy Marshall-King on the second tackle hands it back to the Knights.

56 min: Another repeat set for the Knights after a Kalyn Ponga grubber but Jack Cogger puts the ball down inside the Red Zone and the Dolphins survive.

50 min: Jacob Saifiti heads up the tunnel nursing a corked thigh and seems unlikely to return for the Knights.

45 min: The Knights go further ahead after a strong run by Adam Elliott gets them into the back field and Fletcher Sharpe busts the line and sends Dylan Lucas over for a try. Kalyn Ponga's conversion makes it 26-6.

43 min: A mistake by Kai Pearce-Paul opens the door for the Dolphins but Josh Kerr returns the favour and the opportunity is lost for the visitors.

Half-time: On the back of 20 of 23 completed sets and five line breaks to one, the Knights take a 14-point lead to the sheds. In a superb first half Kalyn Ponga came up with three try assists and three line break assists to go with 109 run metres. In the battle of the Saifiti brothers it's Newcastle's Jacob leading the way with 101 metres from nine runs in 24 minutes of game time while Daniel played 25 minutes but made just 35 metres from four runs.

33 min: On the back of an error by Greg Marzhew the Knights crack when Dolphins No.7 Isaiya Katoa goes to the line and puts Mark Nicholls over under the sticks. Jamayne Isaako adds the extras to make it 20-6.

28 min: More classy work from Kalyn Ponga as he dazzles the Dolphins with his footwork and sends veteran centre Dane Gagai over for the Knights' fourth try. Ponga converts to make it 20-0. 

22 min: Dolphins centre Herbie Farnworth is placed on report for making late contact with Kalyn Ponga after he had delivered the final pass for Best's try.

20 min: Straight from the dropout the Knights power down field into the Red Zone and Kalyn Ponga delivers the final pass for a rampaging Bradman Best to score his first try of the season. Ponga sprays the conversion attempt but the Knights lead 14-0.

19 min: Kalyn Ponga earns his team a repeat set with a neat grubber into the in goal which Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow cleans up.

14 min: A double whammy for the Dolphins after the disallowed try as the Knights go up the other end score through James Schiller after Jack Cogger and Kalyn Ponga again combine in the lead-up.

13 min: Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow crosses after great lead-up work by Kodi Nikorima but the try is disallowed by the bunker for obstruction by Felise Kaufusi when Nikorima broke the line on his own 40-metre line.

10 min: Kalyn Ponga and Jack Cogger handle before Kai Pearce-Paul gets a lofted pass over the top for James Schiller to score in the corner for the Knights. Ponga converts for a 6-0 lead for the home side. 

2 min: A 'roll ball' penalty against Dolphins veteran Felise Kaufusi puts his team under early pressure but their defence holds firm.

1 min: In their first ever match against each other, Jacob and Daniel Saifiti come together in the game's first hit-up. 

Late Mail: Both sides will line up 1-17 with no late changes on a mild night at McDonald Jones Stadium. Brodie Jones is 18th man for the Knights and Sean O'Sullivan fills the role for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins will play their 50th game since entering the premiership in 2023. Winger Jamayne Isaako has scored points in every one of his club's 49 games.
