The NRL is proud to showcase Indigenous and Māori excellence in business as the rugby league world turns its focus to the annual Harvey Norman All Stars.
Following the success of partnering with Indigenous-owned businesses for the first time in 2024, the NRL has expanded the concept to also include Māori-owned businesses.
The idea was first proposed by NRL players who suggested taking advantage of the popularity and reach of the All Stars event to give the nation an introduction to Indigenous and Māori excellence in business.
Businesses were invited to nominate their companies late last year, with Indigenous-owned and Māori-owned businesses selected for promotion during the event.
Indigenous Players Advisory Group representative Cody Walker said it's important the players use their profiles to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses.
"It's important that we are creating opportunities to be supported through such an important week on our rugby league calendar," Walker said. "It gives you a sense of pride knowing that the game is using Indigenous-owned businesses and giving them the exposure to really enhance and improve our mobs’ future.
"A lot of our Indigenous owned businesses are built from the ground up in our communities so it’s important that we celebrate those businesses. It impacts our communities a lot as it gives another opportunity for our kids to be inspired with various businesses across our country."
The expansion of the concept to include Māori businesses was embraced by the Māori sides and Zahara Temara said it highlights the importance of the All Stars match for communities in both Australia and New Zealand.
"Stepping on to the field knowing that you’re supporting Māori-owned businesses is huge for us and it’s a big reminder of our duty to uplift and empower our whānau, communities and culture," Temara, a member of the Māori Mana group, said. "It’s not just a game. Māori support Māori."
