New club coaches Kristian Woolf and Michael Maguire have named their first team line-ups of 2025, with the Dolphins and Broncos taking on club affiliate sides in trials this weekend.

NRL experienced players Harrison Graham, Mason Teague, Peter Hola and Ethan Quai-Ward have been named in in Woolf’s first Dolphins line-up, leading a young team against Central Queensland Capras in Gladstone on Saturday.

Foundation Dolphin Graham made his NRL debut with the club in 2023, but was hampered by injury in 2024 before finishing the year with Redcliffe Dolphins, helping them to reach the Hostplus Cup grand final.

“This weekend, it's going to be a young team coming out, heaps of train and trial boys get an opportunity; first time in the Dolphins colours and it'll be pretty exciting for everyone,” Graham said.

“Hopefully we can shine some of the stuff that we've been practicing in the pre-season and go after it.

“The boys have been putting in extra effort here and just trying to put our foot forward heading into the new season.

“It's been pretty hot up here in Redcliffe at the moment and we're all glad that the first game's coming around and we get an opportunity to showcase our skills that we've been practicing.

“We've been focusing on a lot of defensive stuff over the last few months and for me, that's probably something I want to improve on.

“Coming into this pre-season, I wanted to become more fitter as well and I feel like I've done that, so I'm also keen to show off my attacking skills up in Gladstone, see how we go.”

The game kicks off on Saturday, February 8 at 6pm (AEST) at the Gladstone Coal Exporters Sports Complex (Marley Brown Oval) and will be live-streamed on the Dolphins Facebook page.

The Broncos will also get their first hit-out against their Cup affiliate Burleigh Bears, with head coach Michael Maguire naming a 26-player squad for Saturday’s trial at UAA Park.

The starting side features six of the Broncos top 30 players, with Jock Madden to captain the side, while centre Delouise Hoeter makes his return to the field after suffering a season-ending knee injury last April where he ruptured his patella tendon at training.

Hoeter said advice from Roosters utility Connor Watson and All Blacks halfback Cam Roigard helped keep him on track for his return.

“I didn't really hear about it before … you sort of hear about ACLs and recos on the shoulder, but it was, patellar tendon rupture in my right knee," Hoeter said.

“Fastest return date would be six months usually, the longest is about 12 months, where Connor Watson, it took him about that much time to come back.

“I reached out to Connor Watson, also Cam Roigard, who plays for the All Blacks who both did the same injury and they were really quite helpful to give me the confidence that if I do the little things that I'll be back to where I want to be."

Tyson Smoothy, Josiah Karapani, Josh Rogers, Jaiyden Hunt and giant prop Ben Te Kura will also start at Burleigh.

“I think everyone's got a great opportunity this week to put their best foot forward," Hoeter said.

“We speak about having the ability to complete our role and our tasks for the team, and I'm sure Ben’s able to do that.

“We've all built the capacity to be able to fulfill our roles as a player, and Benny's come a long way, but there's still a long way to go, not just for Benny, but a lot more players who are a bit more experienced than Ben.

"But it's a great opportunity for us to put forward what Madge has instilled in us."

Second rower Matt Koellner will be a busy man on game day and will start the match with the Broncos, before switching to a Bears jersey in the second half to join with his Cup side where he played 21 games last year.

Gates open at the Miami grounds at 1pm, with kick-off for the main game at 5pm (AEST).
