Rookie eyes Knights scalp in new role against former teammate

Young gun Lailani Montgomery says she's grabbing her opportunity with both hands as she prepares to step into a new role for this Saturday's grand final rematch.

Looking to make her fourth appearance in the NRLW this weekend, Montgomery is grateful for the opportunities and support that have come her way since debuting against the Cowboys in Round 4.

Entering the Telstra Women's Premiership at a young age, the nineteen-year-old praises her hard work and determination, as well as Titans coach Karyn Murphy and fellow players for their encouragement throughout the transition.

"Coming from a development spot, I didn't think debuting this year would be on the cards, but Murph and the girls have been super encouraging with me," Montgomery told Titans.com.au.

“It’s been a big step up coming from Tarsha Gale Cup and Harvey Norman Women's Premiership, but it’s taught me that no matter how hard you work, if you keep persevering you can get there.

"Everyone is always helping out whenever you need, so I’ve been really privileged and lucky to debut at the Titans."

Looking to experienced players for guidance in her debut season, the youngster has found immense support through Georgia Hale; with Montgomery unable to fathom her new reality of sharing the field with the Titans captain.

“She’s just a leader on and off the field and is an inspiration to me as a player; even just getting to play with her, I still pinch myself every game," the young gun said.

“All those really experienced players who you think tick that box of helping out us younger girls, definitely tick that box and beyond."

With Lauren Brown ruled out for the remainder of the season with a broken hand, the 18-year-old is relishing the opportunity to step into the halfback role as a replacement in their must-win clash against the Knights this weekend.

"It's extremely unfortunate for Loz but bad things do happen and this is a great opportunity for me to keep playing," Montgomery said.

“She's got very big shoes to fill but I do know all the girls have my back and are super keen for me to jump on and take this opportunity, so I’ll be taking it with two hands.

“Fui (Taliah Fuimaono) has also been really awesome, especially with the halves role.

“I was originally on that right edge, but Fui took me under her wing taking me for kicking practice after training.”

Looking ahead to this Saturday's grand final rematch, Montgomery will find herself up against former teammate Jesse Southwell; with the pair playing together in the Tarsha Gale Cup for the Roosters last year.

“It’ll be cool playing against Jesse for the first time however, shots are on," she joked.

“Friends on the field and friends off the field, but the game plan is to get the job done and it doesn’t matter who you’re up against."
