Cotter focusing on finals after winning Sports Dad of Year

Reuben Cotter is focused in leading the Cowboys into a finals series for the first time after taking time away with his wife Mackenzie and their two young children ahead of the play-offs.

Cotter, who welcomed his son Banks in June and has a daughter named Sunny, has been crowned the 2024 Philips Sports Dad of the Year.

“I’m very humbled to win the award. It’s definitely something that I’m proud to be recognised for," the North Queensland co-captain said.

“My family is everything to me, and being recognised for something I love to do is just a bonus.”

After helping to lead the Cowboys to a 38-30 defeat of the Storm last Thursday night that keeps alive the Townsville-based club's hopes of securing a home finals match, Cotter spent the weekend with his young family.

“Because we had a game on Thursday night, it’s nice to have a weekend off with the family," he said.

"This weekend, we’re going to stay at our local hotel, relax by the pool, enjoy some good food, and just switch off with Kenz and the kids. Can’t beat that.”

Aside from spending quality time with Sunny and Banks, Cotter - co-captain of the Cowboys alongside Queensland team-mates Tom Dearden - will now turn his attention to the upcoming finals series.

“Both Tommy and I are really excited about the finals. They’ve crept up quite quickly," Cotter said.

"It’s our first time as co-captains, so we’re pumped. It’s anyone’s game this year, and we can’t wait to get out there and give it our all with the boys. We’re excited for the challenge ahead.”

Known for his toughness on the field and kindness off it, Cotter has generously matched the $5,000 prize, which will be donated to his nominated charity, the Brighter Lives Foundation in Townsville.

The foundation will now receive a total of $10,000 thanks to his win.

“I’m very proud to be an ambassador for the Brighter Lives Foundation. Every time I visit, I leave feeling very grateful," Cotter said.

"Putting a smile on those children’s faces means a lot to me, and I know this money will help support the children and their families through tough times.”
