After almost a decade on the Test scene, former Kiwi Ferns captain Krystal Rota has announced her immediate retirement from the international game.
A mainstay of the national team since her debut in 2015, Rota, who will turn 38 next week, also played for both the Warriors and Knights in the NRLW and captained the Māori All Stars against the Indigenous All Stars.
Ahead of next month's Tests against the Jillaroos and Tonga, Rota said while she had worn the black and white jersey "with passion and pride" it was now someone else's turn to take over.
“An absolute honour & privilege it’s been to wear the Kiwi Fern [jersey]. Memories I’ll forever cherish with lifelong friendships made," she said.
"To represent our beautiful country in the code that I adore, it’s been a dream come true."
New Zealand Rugby League GM of high-performance and football Motu Tony added that Rota's influence would continue to be felt by the next generation of Kiwi Ferns.
“Her dedication and talent have inspired many players, particularly our young up-and-coming female participants," Tony said.
"We are grateful for all she has done for the Kiwi Ferns and rugby league in New Zealand."
