With NSW out to avoid a clean sweep and put on a show for their loyal fans in Sydney, it was Brad Fittler's Blue chip stock coming up trumps at Accor Stadium.
In the wake of the 32-6 loss in Game Two in Brisbane, the criticism of coach Fittler and his skipper James Tedesco had grown louder, but two of the Blues' favourite sons answered the call as NSW got home 24-10 on Wednesday night.
Playing in his 22nd consecutive Origin match, Tedesco came up with 235 metres from 17 runs and broke 11 tackles, leading from the front as the new-look Blues denied the Maroons a first clean sweep since 2010.
"It's funny I was talking to Teddy's dad earlier, and he was rattling off stats, he couldn't understand why people were criticising him so much," Fittler told media post-match.
"Teddy has been strong. During the game he changed the way he played because we asked him to do some things and he was able to do it so it means he is listening and thinking, he's not just full of pressure and angst.
The Foxx scores an instant classic
"I was wrapped the way he went tonight."
Fittler revealed that he and Tedesco had taken time during the camp to talk about the pressure the 30-year-old was under and how best to respond.
"At the end of the day if things aren't going great you need to change some things, they don't change on their own," Fittler said.
"He's a smart kid, he's got a lot going on, he'll work it out. The good thing is he's tough so he'll work it out."
As for his own future after six series at the helm and with his contract expired, Fittler said he would "wait and see" as he still has a couple of months in the job.
After winning his first two series in 2018-19, Fittler has lost three of the past four but had plenty to be proud of as his new-look team piled on four tries to two to send the 75,000 Blues fans home happy.
Best gets one on debut
"It was great to see some of the blokes that were in the first couple of games come up tonight," Fittler said.
"People will go home and remember that Foxx try forever but we have to do it in Game One and Two.
"I'm glad our fans got to get off their chair and have a cheer and at the end of the day [that win] may have had a bearing on what the [NSWRL] board may think because they'll decide who's going to be the coach going forward and I'm gathering they'll speak to me about how I feel and if I've got the energy or I want to do it.
"So them playing well today and winning... the consequences of them getting beaten by 30 would be different."
