Team doctor Matt Hislop said on Wednesday that Kalyn Ponga (concussion) had passed all return to play protocols and would take his place at fullback while Cameron Munster (shoulder) was getting precautionary treatments from the team physio but is a certain starter in the decider. Ponga missed the Knights' game against the Titans on Friday but was given the all clear after seeing independent specialists in Newcastle on Monday. "He’s feeling fine. He will train with us as normal with no restrictions, so that’s good news," Hislop said.

Cowboys teenager Jeremiah Nanai moves into the starting side to cover for Felise Kaufusi, who is in America with his ill father. Nanai's fellow Cowboy Tom Gilbert will make his Origin debut from the bench. Maroons selectors have also added Cowboys flyer Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Roosters playmaker Sam Walker to the squad.

Cowboys prop Jordan McLean will make his State of Origin debut in place of Payne Haas, who has succumbed to a shoulder injury. McLean played for the Kangaroos at the 2017 World Cup and will become the fifth-oldest player to debut for the Blues. Coach Brad Fittler has stuck solid with Stephen Crichton and Matt Burton in the centres so Jack Wighton has been named 18th Man after playing Game One and then missing Game Two with COVID. The Blues' extended bench includes Eels skipper Clint Gutherson, Sharks playmaker Nicho Hynes, Knights prop Jacob Saifiti and Cowboys hooker Reece Robson.
