It was a memorable battle of the big cats in 2019, with Wests Tigers putting up one of the most remarkable starts to a game in club history. In scarcely believable scenes, Michael Maguire’s men raced in four tries inside the opening 10 minutes, with their 26-0 lead after 20 minutes the best start in Wests Tigers history. Old-stagers Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall showed their timeless class in the win, while Luke Brooks and Moses Mbye also produced starring roles in the eventual 30-4 win.

With James Tedesco tearing his opponents to shreds early on, it appeared a thrashing was on the cards for the Roosters when they met the Raiders in 2019. Tedesco set up three tries and scored one of his own to give Trent Robinson’s men a commanding 24-6 half-time lead. But, in a clash that would turn out to be a preview of that year’s Grand Final, the Green Machine launched a stunning comeback — running in three tries to 17 minutes to set the game up for a grandstand finish. With time running out, Ricky Stuart’s men came within a whisker of levelling the match, only for Nick Cotric’s pass for a what-would-be-final-try to be ruled forward to give the Roosters the win.

The Sea Eagles were still repairing their season after a horror start to the year when they arrived in Brisbane for Magic Round in 2021, while their opponents also came into the contest outside the top eight with Kevin Walters early in his Broncos coaching career. In a stunning result, eventual Dally M Medal winner Tom Trbojevic delivered his best game of the year to that point — scoring two tries and setting up two more — while captain Daly Cherry-Evans was at his masterful best as the Sea Eagles put Brisbane to the sword. The 44-point loss was the Broncos’ worst-ever defeat to Manly as the Sea Eagles continued their stunning resurrection from the bottom of the ladder into eventual finals contention.

Who could forget Melbourne’s incredible attacking display as they ran riot against the Eels in 2019? In just his fifth game of first-grade at the time, it was rising Storm sensation Ryan Papenhuyzen who stole the headlines with an incredible final half an hour after Eels winger Maika Sivo was sin-binned for a high shot on Jahrome Hughes. Papenhuyzen announced himself as a star of the future, chalking up three linebreaks, two try assists and a try as the Storm ran in an incredible 11 tries to two.
