Cronulla's 2016 premiership match-winner Andrew Fifita may have played his last game for the club with the prop potentially making a mid-season switch to the Super League.
Fifita could link with his twin David at Wakefield Trinity in a move which would further ease Cronulla's salary cap strain but there has been no formal talks over a switch.
Any club looking to take up the remaining 18 months of Fifita's contract would need to pay a significant portion for the Sharks to consider granting a release.
Complicating matters further, Wakefield are also reportedly looking to free up an overseas quota spot to fit Fifita in.
His future has been uncertain for some time since he was dropped to reserve grade at the Sharks at the start of this season, with the ex-NSW front-rower sounding out the Dragons last month about a potential move.
Cronulla have made no comment on Fifita's future or the prospect of another team taking over his contract, which is understood to be worth approximately $800,000 a season.
Andrew Fifita take a bow
Yorkshire Live reported Fifita's twin brother David was telling teammates Andrew was likely to join him at the club after a loss to Catalans over the weekend.
The 31-year-old has battled ongoing knee issues in recent seasons, prompting suggestions of an early retirement after a stellar 223-game career including 10 NSW Origin appearances and 17 Tests - seven for Australia and 10 for Tonga.
Get Caught Up: Round 5 must-see moments
Fifita in turn has refuted that, shedding 20 kilos over the off-season in a bid to keep up with the NRL's latest six-again rules.
He has been plying his trade with feeder club Newtown in recent weeks.
He won't be playing for them the next three weeks after incurring a suspension while playing for Newtown last weekend.
The suspension also includes NRL matches.
Cronulla have been eyeing a roster re-jig for some time amid an intense focus on coach John Morris's position.
Club powerbrokers were scheduled to meet with the coach's management on Monday morning amid reports linking Roosters assistant Craig Fitzgibbon to the club for next season.
