Broncos veteran Darius Boyd said his home crowd's boos at half-time in the 30-12 loss to the Titans "hurt" deeply as he outlined how the club could dig itself out of a massive hole.
Brisbane trailed 22-nil against the Titans at Suncorp Stadium at half-time in what was the club’s first game at the venue this year where fans could attend.
The Broncos were already under the pump for their recent form and after losing five games in a row, Boyd knows the scrutiny from outside the club will only intensify.
The dual premiership winner has seen it all and has been the brunt of plenty of criticism throughout his career but said "the most disappointing thing is your own fans booing you off at half-time".
"It is very disappointing. It hurts, but they probably have a right," Boyd said.
Match Highlights: Broncos v Titans
"I feel for the fans. People came out to watch the game for the first time. With their hard earned money they want to come and watch the club play and deserved to go home with a better performance from us.
"That is what hurts my feelings the most. My family was there and the boys’ families were there for the first time after the coronavirus [stand down] and it was just disappointing to send them home with a performance like that."
The booing reflects a fan base that has come to expect better from the six-time premiership-winning Broncos.
After four consecutive losses, and facing the last-placed side, Boyd agreed it was an opportunity lost. The supporters expected more, and so did Boyd.
Seibold believes he is the man to guide Broncos out of form slump
"It was 22-nil at half-time. You think about games you should and shouldn’t win. You never take anyone lightly but it is a game we should have won," Boyd said.
"We had the effort there in parts but key areas, and our attention to detail, just let us down.
"In the first two rounds we were playing really well and for each other. Nothing has changed. The team hasn’t changed. The strategies haven’t changed. The game plan hasn’t changed.
"Our mindset and attention to detail in a few key areas … maybe. That is something that we can control in house and we are going to have to do that."
The Broncos, with the Telstra Premiership's worst defensive record through seven rounds, have copped plenty of criticism of late from fans, former players and from pundits.
That is only set to intensify leading into Saturday night's clash with the Warriors in Gosford.
"It doesn’t get any easier this week outside our bubble," Boyd said.
"There is going to be criticism but we need to stick strong and stick tight because we just need to get a win.
"All you have to do is look at the scorelines against us, which tells me that our defence needs to be worked on.
"Defence wins games and premierships and our defence, for whatever reason, is not where it needs to be."
Off the field, the club received mixed news on Sunday.
The good news is prop Matt Lodge should be fit to play the Warriors on Saturday.
On Sunday Lodge was cleared of a leg injury after being caught in an awkward position in Saturday's game against the Titans.
Broncos Head Of Performance Paul Devlin told the club website: "Matt settled really well overnight and had a scan today to check for any damage.
"We expect Matt to settle further in the coming days and are hopeful that he will not miss any games."
The unhappy news is winger Corey Oates is facing a fine after being charged with contrary conduct by the match review committee.
Oates was sin-binned over comments he made to referee Peter Gough in the final minutes of the loss to the Titans, but the committee decided further sanction was required.
