The Sharks offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of former first grade player Adam Maher as we mourn his passing at age 47 after a long battle with Motor Neuron Disease (MND).
Shark #293, Maher was a robust backrower, debuting in the top grade in 1994 before going onto play 43 games for the Cronulla club through until 1996.
Joining the Sharks from Brisbane Easts, Maher would play under fellow Queenslander John Lang as his coach and alongside Easts Tigers clubmates Paul Green, Geoff Bell and Andrew Neave at Cronulla, before heading to the UK
Maher became a popular player at Gateshead in 1999 and then at Hull FC from 2000-2003 where he made over 100 appearances for the ‘black and whites’ and became a crowd favourite.
Maher was in Sydney in November of 2018, a little over 12 months after being diagnosed with the disease, in showing his support for Paul Fisher, another former Shark who tragically passed away from MND.
The Day on the Green Fundraiser conducted by the Great White Club, the Sharks network of former players, coaches and officials, helped raise funds for Fisher and his family, with Gavin Miller, Andrew Ettingshausen, David Peachey, David Hatch, Mitch Healey, Craig Greenhill and a long list of other club legends attending the event.
Such is Maher’s character he came down from Brisbane for the Paul Fisher fundraiser but preferred to have the focus and attention directed towards his former Sharks teammate.
In recent years Maher also travelled from Queensland to the Shire to attend many Sharks reunions.
Maher is survived by his wife Trudy and their five children.
Adam’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 3 at Wynnum Baptist Church, 287 Kianawah Rd, Wynnum West at 12:30pm. A wake will follow at Wynnum Manly Juniors, Stradbroke Ave, Wynnum.
