Croft determined to lead at half for Brisbane

New Broncos signing Brodie Croft said it was a "huge" honour to attend a camp with the club's leaders in Tasmania to kick off his new career at Red Hill.

The former Storm halfback will not be in the Broncos' new official leadership group but coach Anthony Seibold took him to Tasmania to get to know the leaders as he plays in a key position which will require him to steer the team around the park.

 Broncos young guns Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan travelled to Tasmania and are in line to be promoted to the  club’s new leadership group which the Broncos are yet to officially announce.

The duo joined captain Darius Boyd, veteran back-rower Alex Glenn and prop Matt Lodge on a trip to Cradle Mountain in Tasmania’s wilderness region in the Central Highlands. Coach  Seibold also attended the leadership camp.  

Croft, who attended his first Broncos training run on Monday, said it was "a huge" honour to attend the camp. The 22-year-old said his position on the field would require him to show leadership.

"Any time you are a halfback of a squad you are going to have the pressure of having some leadership regardless of whether you are in the leadership group or not," he said.

"I am looking forward to leading these boys around and having a big influence on the team.

"I like that accountability. The onus is on me to control the team and lead them around."

A humble Croft also said he had to earn his "stripes".

Boyd, Glenn and Lodge were members of the leadership group in 2019 alongside hooker Andrew McCullough and the now retired Matt Gillett.

The new leadership team will be tasked with inspiring their teammates by their actions on and off the field as the Broncos target returning to the top four in 2020 and becoming a premiership force.

Croft appeared sharp at his first full training session with the Broncos where the full squad was attendance. He was "stoked" to be back in Queensland where he grew up and where his family still resided.

He credited the Storm for four years of outstanding development as a footballer and a person but now can't wait to work under coach Anthony Seibold, a mentor that went hard to sign him.

"Seibs is a really good coach. I was fortunate enough to be in one of his representative teams as an 18-year-old and from that day onward I knew that he knows what he is on about and is a real good manager with players as well," Croft said.

"The few meetings that I have had since in the last few weeks have been real positive and I am looking forward to working under him."

Croft will wear the No.7 jersey made famous by Allan Langer.

"It is a prestigious jersey at a prestigious club and a massive opportunity for me to be a part of," he said.

"I am hugely honoured to be even spoken about as a possibility to play in that position up here at the Brisbane Broncos. So many great players have played in that position.

"We watched a film before we went out and trained and a few of the greats spoke at that and I got goose bumps watching it. It gave me something to strive towards.

"It is oozing with talent this team. The forward pack speaks for itself."

The Broncos hope Croft can also forge a strong partnership with his likely five-eighth partner Anthony Milford.

"I'd like to think of myself as a good team manager so I will do my best to organise and communicate, and let him do his thing. He is a freak of a player Milf and I am looking forward to playing with him," Croft said.

"He offers so much X-factor and I am hoping our games can complement each other."
