Oates signs new contract with Broncos; Glenn expected to follow

Corey Oates will remain in Broncos colours after re-signing with his junior club as veteran Alex Glenn is expected to do the same leading into a mooted summer overhaul.

Brisbane announced Oates' new deal on Monday afternoon, which extends him through until the end of next year along with options for 2021 and 2022 in his favour.

Should the Queensland flyer take up his player options it would make for a decade-long tenure at the Broncos from Oates, who debuted for the club in 2013.

It's understood Oates knocked back interest from Sydney clubs to re-sign at Red Hill, with 31-year-old Glenn tipped to follow suit ahead of rugby league's new financial year on November 1.

The veteran back-rower had entertained an approach from Penrith and toured the club's facilities earlier this month, but is expected to take up a new deal to remain a one-club man at the Broncos.

Glenn has also been mentioned as a possible captaincy candidate given the upheaval around Anthony Seibold's senior playing group, with Darius Boyd and Andrew McCullough both under pressure to retain starting spots leading into 2020.

Elsewhere, the Broncos are gearing up for a retention battle for young gun David Fifita, who has been linked to a host of clubs including the Roosters, Rabbitohs, Warriors and Eels.

While contracted for next year, the Queensland Origin debutant is able to field official offers from rival outfits at the end of the week.

His breakout season has him in line to triple his current salary, though Brisbane officials remain confident the teenage star will stay put given his family ties north of the border.

NRL.com also understands that at this stage Jack Bird will also be at the club next year.

Brisbane had given Bird permission to negotiate with rival clubs after having his first two seasons with the Broncos ruined by injury, but his management has told Brisbane officials the former NSW star will be on deck for the start of pre-season training.
