West Australian rockers Eskimo Joe will lead the pre-match entertainment extravaganza at Perth’s inaugural Holden State of Origin match to be played at Optus Stadium on Sunday June 23.
The local indie-rock three piece have been selected by the NRL to light up Optus Stadium next Sunday, playing some of their biggest hits from a career spanning more than two decades.
“We consistently look to showcase some of Australia’s best music acts at our biggest events, so we’re delighted that this time it’s Fremantle locals Eskimo Joe who get to kick off the pre-match show on home turf,” NRL Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Abdo said.
“The live event experience is important to our fans and we wanted to provide a local rock band the opportunity to celebrate the first ever Origin game in Perth.”
Fans fortunate enough to have secured their spots to the historic event can also take part in the performance courtesy of the NRL’s partnership with Game Changer MVP’s Flashpoint technology.
Utilising the flashlight strobe function, video display and vibration on smartphones, Flashpoint will connect fans who have downloaded and opened the official NRL App through a unified flash and video display on their own devices, in-line with the live performance and light show.
The performance will the first time a local Perth band has played inside the new, state of the art venue, something not lost on the trio.
"We’re super excited to play our debut performance at the new Optus Stadium, in our very own state of origin, Western Australia,” Eskimo Joe said.
“We’re absolutely stoked! It’s not often you get to play on the biggest stage the NRL has to offer, let alone in your home town."
Eskimo Joe have enjoyed 35 ARIA nominations in their career so far – a number only surpassed by Silverchair, Powderfinger, Kylie Minogue and John Farnham. The 2011 NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final in Sydney was the last time Eskimo Joe played at a major NRL event.
The 2019 Holden State of Origin game in Perth is proudly supported by the WA Government via its tourism agency Tourism Western Australia.
