Nikorima wants Bennett to see out Broncos deal

Brisbane Broncos halfback Kodi Nikorima wants Wayne Bennett to remain at the club in 2019 after revealing the pair caught up this week to discuss the coach's immediate future.

Talk surrounding Bennett's potential swap with Anthony Seibold continues to gain momentum after Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson held talks with Bennett in Liverpool.

Nikorima has spent his entire NRL career under Bennett at the Broncos but is preparing for life without the premiership-winning coach in 2020, and possibly 2019.

The 24-year-old said he put Bennett on the spot with the question during the week.

"I am hoping [he will stay], I caught up with Wayne this week and asked him what his plans were," Nikorima said.

"He said he's still committed to Brisbane but that it's up to the Broncos as to whether they kick him out.

"I'm all for Wayne staying, I'd love to spend another year and keep learning off him."

Nikorima delivered arguably his finest performance in a Kiwis Test jumper against his club coach at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon to score a try and set up three in the 34-0 thrashing of England.

Kiwis coach Michael Maguire praised Nikorima's development and revealed how a conversation he had with the Broncos halfback earlier in the year helped spark a level of belief at the international level.

"He's improved, I remember catching up with Kodi for a coffee about six months ago and I was really impressed then," Maguire said.

"I've felt as he's growing, and knowing him over the last six weeks, I think he's going to be a strong leader the way he's been progressing."

Nikorima insisted Maguire's catch-up only had one topic.

"He came to Brisbane and we spoke about winning," Nikorima said.

"When I first came into this team I was just happy to be in there as the extra number, do the haka and sing national anthem.

"But now this time around it's different, I want to win. I think it's about time I stood up."

While the dominant victory doesn't cover up New Zealand's 2-1 series loss in the history books, Nikorima believes the Kiwis are back on track.

"I think we're still up there, last night I was looking at dinner of the Test numbers some of the boys have played and we've got a young squad," he said.

"It took us two games to get our defence right and that's what won us the game. We wanted to put in a dominant performance and instil a bit of pride back in the black and white jersey."
