The statistic repeated nearly as often as Canberra's record in close games this season is their win-loss ratio against top-eight sides.

However, Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead believes the side has what it takes to cause one of the upsets of the season when they host the top-of-the-table Sydney Roosters at GIO Stadium on Sunday.

Canberra have recent history on their side, having beaten the Roosters 13 times in 19 matches at GIO Stadium, including in each of the past two visits from Trent Robinson's men.

"We've got three games left and we want to win all three to give the boys that are leaving with something to remember so we'll be working hard to try and beat the Roosters this week," Whitehead said.

"It's going to be a tough task because they're in good form, but I still believe in this squad here and I believe we can get the win.

"They're going to want to come down here and stay on top of the table but if we can at least try and knock them off it gives us a bit of motivation to prove to everybody what we are capable of."

If the Raiders fail to win in the final three rounds they remain an outside chance of finishing with the wooden spoon.

It would take a massive collapse from the Raiders for that to happen, given Newcastle's for for-and-against (-165) is the worst in the NRL.

Fresh off another impressive effort in a losing side against the Wests Tigers last weekend, Raiders forward Joe Tapine said the side owes the club's fans an upset win.

"It's a good test for us and we've got to prove a lot to ourselves and the community in these last couple of weeks," Tapine said.

"Canberra always gets out there and supports us, we've just got to turn some of these games into wins for them."

As a result of injuries, Whitehead has been moved into the centres for the Roosters clash, a switch he happily accepted.

"I'd prefer to play back row but if he [coach Ricky Stuart] wants me to play there I will," he said.

"It's a little bit frustrating for me especially once I find some form playing in the back row, but if I have to do that for the team then I'm willing to do that.

"It's a bit different playing in a position you're not quite used to, but you try and do your best job and that's all you can ask for.

"You probably are going to make mistakes but if I need to play there again I will."

Canberra will wear their Ricky Stuart Foundation support jerseys on Sunday as they raise money and awareness for autism in the region something the playing group is always happy to be a part of.

"Ricky's foundation is a big part of what we do here so to wear these jerseys and make some money for these charities is a good cause," Whitehead said.
