The Rabbitohs have shut down talk of Todd Carney re-entering the NRL via Redfern in a strongly worded statement.
The club emphasised its halves strategy revolves around developing young halves in response to a Fairfax Media report that feeder club North Sydney have expressed interest in signing the 31-year-old former Raider, Rooster and Shark after he abandoned an attempt to rekindle his NRL career with North Queensland in order to move back to Sydney to be with his ill mother.
In response to the Bears considering signing the 2010 Dally M Medal winner, the Rabbitohs issued a statement flatly rejecting the possibility of Carney playing in the Telstra Premiership for the club.
Behind first-choice NRL halves Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker, the club has a number of young halves headed by Adam Doueihi in the system.
"We've spoken to Norths about Todd Carney and it's our position that we will develop our young halves as opposed to bringing in a player from outside the club in this instance," said Rabbitohs general manager of football, Shane Richardson.
"Players such as Adam Doueihi, Connor Tracey and Dean Hawkins are all excellent young players who we see as future players in the NRL and our efforts will be concentrated on them."
