In 2015, North Queensland began their season with three straight losses, before beginning a run that carried them to a one-point win over the Brisbane Broncos in the grand final.
It's that statistic that gives fans belief the Cowboys can turn their poor start to the season around but coach Paul Green doesn't put much stock in history.
Green is more focused on rejuvenating the form of his team, which could soon receive a boost to its depth with former Dally M Medal winner Todd Carney joining the Cowboys for training on Tuesday and Wednesday as the club ramps up its bid to get permission from the NRL to sign the controversial five-eighth.
Green is confident his team can overcome their slow start because the majority of their squad were involved in last season's golden run to the grand final not because of how their 2015 season unfolded.
"I love when people try to add stats, they said in 2015 that no one has won the comp for 50 years or whatever when they lose their first three, so I don't read too much into that," Green said.
Green is hopeful the club will soon be able to sign Carney and five-eighth Michael Morgan believes the former NSW playmaker would be a good addition.
"He'll fit in really well here if he's given the opportunity to… he's been out of the NRL for a very long time now and you haven't' heard anything go wrong with him since he's left the game," Morgan said.
"I think he deserves it, he's a very good player and we want to see good players in the NRL."
Morgan echoed his coach's sentiment about what stats say the Cowboys can and can't do, and is confident that keeping the New Zealand Warriors try-less in the second half was a good start to re-building their confidence.
"It's been a rough month of footy, it's not ideal and it's never how you want to start a season but unfortunately we are where we are," Morgan said.
"In no way are we in panic stations or anything like that, we know that we're not playing our best, a majority of games at the moment haven't been close to our best."
"Green said after the game that there were parts that were more us in the second half, the way we defended and that type of thing."
While their start to 2015 has given them the confidence they can turn it around, the competition is the tightest it's ever been, as evidenced by the ladder at the moment according to Morgan.
"If you look at the ladder this year, the teams that are going well and the teams that have lost a few it's completely different to what a lot of people would have though… any team on their day can have a win," he said.
