Cordner staying with the Roosters
Sydney Roosters captain Boyd Cordner said the calls from rival clubs had commenced prior to him re-signing for the Bondi Junction club for another five years.
Despite the interest, Cordner told NRL.com that his heart was always set on staying with the Tricolours.
''It was a process and it was within the rules to talk to other clubs and there was a couple of strong suitors but at the end of the day my first priority was with the Roosters," Cordner said.
"I didn’t really get too far along with any other clubs to tell you the truth, I really had my heart set here and I wanted to stay so I’m really glad we could work it out and come to an agreement.''
With much said about the rarity of one-club players in today's game, Cordner said that he would love to fit into that category when he finally decided to hang up the boots.
''Yeah, I suppose that's the reason behind the long contract for the further five years. I really couldn’t see myself anywhere else so I thought why not. I'm super pumped to be at the club for a further five years.
''I would love nothing more than to be a one-club player. I think as a kid, or if you speak to any of the players, it’s pretty good if you can become a one-club player.''
Cordner's team-mate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has played alongside Cordner for a number of seasons is pleased to see his good mate staying put.
''It’s a massive credit to him," said Waerea-Hargreaves. "The way he’s not only conducted himself but performed over the last few years.''
''I'm super happy for him and the Roosters. He’s our skipper and it’s very well deserved.''
''For me, he's a really good mate of mine and we've been through a lot so to see him re-sign and recommit to the club for a long time, it’s a credit to himself and the club.''
