Wayne Bennett will become the first coach to reach the milestone of 700 first grade games on Sunday.
NRL CEO Dave Smith said today that Bennett was one of the most successful coaches in the game’s history.
Bennett began his NRL coaching career with the Canberra Raiders before becoming the first coach of the Brisbane Broncos where he won six premierships.
He then moved on to coach the St George Illawarra Dragons and the Newcastle Knights.
Bennett notches up his 700th game when the Knights take on the Sharks at Remondis Stadium tomorrow.
“Wayne has been one of the game’s most successful coaches and, through his leadership, is also a credit to the game”. Mr Smith said.
“While Wayne has announced he is leaving the Knights at the end of the season I have no doubt he will continue to play a prominent role in the game.”
Bennett has been in charge of more than twice as many games as any other current NRL coach. Craig Bellamy is second among the current coaches with 305 games.
Tim Sheens is second on the all-time list of games as a premiership coach with 669 matches.
