The National Rugby League has supported the actions of both the Sydney Roosters and the Cronulla Sharks in dealing with recent disciplinary issues.
A review of the actions of each club has been carried out in conjunction with the NRL’s disciplinary processes.
The NRL notes the Roosters decision today to offer on-going support to nineteen-year-old Jake Friend despite the termination of the player’s contract.
“In both cases we believe the clubs have dealt with the matter appropriately,” NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said today.
“It would seem important now that Jake is given time to address his challenges and we therefore would be highly unlikely to consider any new application to register any future club contract with him in the short to medium term.
“I don’t see that a firm time-line can be established at this point except to say that we would need to see strong evidence that he has addressed the issues that have led him to this point.
“At the same time there is a clear message to everyone that the clubs and the players need to maintain the appropriate standards.
“There are extensive education programmes in place and support services but there must also be consequences for individuals and deterrents to others.”
