Biography
Katrina Fanning played 26 Tests for Australia during a representative career spanning 14 years during which she also captained NSW.
A frontrower or hooker, Fanning was a member of the first officially recognised Jillaroos team in 1995. However, growing up in Junee, she had had to fight for her right to play juniors until the age of 12. She only resumed playing after moving to Canberra in her adult years.
A Canberra Raiders director, Fanning - a proud Wiradjuri woman - was in 2018 appointed Chair of the Australian Rugby League Indigenous Council, which she has served on since 2012.
During her playing career, Fanning served as President of the Australian Women's Rugby League, as well as Canberra Women's Rugby League. She was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2020 for distinguished service to the Indigenous community through education and health initiatives, and to sport.
The Katrina Fanning Shield is the top women’s competition in Canberra.
