Today, two NSW legends go head-to-head, with Paul Gallen's record-breaking performance going up against Brad Fittler's fond farewell.
Gallen's 80-minute effort
Staring down a sixth straight series defeat after a hard fought 16-12 loss in Game One at Suncorp, Blues coach Ricky Stuart called on captain Paul Gallen to literally lead from the front, shifting his skipper into the front row in order to stack the NSW pack with mobile back-rowers. Despite having played the prop in just one game before (when the Sharks were thumped 44-12 by the Tigers in 2003) the move proved a master stroke as Gallen churned out a phenomenal 211 running metres from 27 hit ups, turning in an 80-minute performance that earned him man-of-the-match honours.
Fittler's final try
With the likes of Shaun Timmins, Craig Gower, Matt Orford, Brett Kimmorley and Trent Barrett all injured, NSW coach Phil Gould called on 32-year-old Brad Fittler to come out of representative retirement in 2004. The Blues went down 22-18 at Suncorp Stadium in Game Two, but having lost his previous Origin swansong in 2001, Fittler enjoyed a fitting triumph in Game Three, capping a 31-game career for NSW with a charge-down try as the Blues swept to a 36-14 victory.
