The National Rugby League has reviewed the circumstances of a bet placed by Nathan Tinkler in relation to the Newcastle Knights in 2011 and determined that there is no cause for further investigation or action.
Court documents cited in the media yesterday referred to a bet placed by the Newcastle owner on August 13, 2011, eight days after he assumed formal ownership of the club.
Inquiries today revealed that Mr Tinkler had reported the bet to then Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, in 2011 explaining that he had been unaware of the rule preventing an owner from betting and an undertaking was secured that he would not bet on games in the future.
Inquiries with Newcastle, Mr Tinkler and Mr Gallop today have confirmed these events.
A check on betting records today suggests that there is no evidence that would indicate any gambling by Mr Tinkler on the Knights since that point.
“It has now transpired that this is a matter that was dealt with by the League at the time,” NRL Chief Operating Officer, Mr Jim Doyle, said today.
“It was appropriate that the Integrity Unit look into the issue raised by the reporting of the court material to verify the circumstances but based on our inquiries no further action is warranted.”
