Trailblazer Vanessa Foliaki has announced her immediate NRLW retirement after a stellar career punctuated by immense success at international, state and club level.
The 31-year-old hangs up the boots after playing 38 NRLW matches – 20 for the Sharks – while also representing Australia, Tonga and NSW on the biggest stages.
The uncompromising forward's glittering résumé includes the 2017 World Cup triumph with the Jillaroos, four NRLW grand final appearances – most recently with Cronulla last year – and captaining Tonga at the 2024 Pacific Championships.
Foliaki was involved in many breakthroughs for the women's game including the first official State of Origin match in 2018. She etched herself in history again by representing the Roosters in the inaugural NRLW premiership fixture later that year.
The durable back-rower is proud to be retiring on her own terms.
"It was a very tough decision given I've been part of the game for a long time, but there was always going to be a point where my job outside of footy took priority," Foliaki said.
"That is the main reason I've stepped away from the game. I couldn't commit 100% to the NRLW like I wanted to due to the nature of my job.
"In saying that, it's a decision I am very content with. When I look back at my career, I'm at peace with knowing that I've done what I wanted to in the game and achieved more than I could have asked for.
"I want to thank my family and friends and everyone who supported me over the years during my career. Thanks for getting me to this point."
A foundation player for the Sharks, Foliaki paid tribute to NRLW head coach Tony Herman, female pathway manager Casey Bromilow and all the staff and players throughout her memorable stint in black, white and blue.
"To have ended my career playing with Cronulla and being part of that core group that started back in 2023 makes me so proud," Foliaki said.
"It's definitely a highlight of my career knowing the last time I played the game was in a Cronulla jersey. I'd like to thank everyone at all the clubs I was part of. To the Roosters, Eels and in particular the Sharks, I enjoyed my time."
Sharks coach Herman congratulated Foliaki on her impact and legacy.
"Vanessa will no doubt go down as a great of the women's game; someone who has opened the door and shown what's possible for future generations," Herman said.
"We've been extremely fortunate to have Vanessa as part of our foundation squad at the Sharks. Her leadership and experience over the past two years have been invaluable to the success of our program.
"While it's sad that she won't be on the field anymore, we're excited to see what the next chapter has in store for Vanessa. She will always be part of the Sharks family."
