Queensland Origin coach Tahnee Norris will take charge of Papua New Guinea in a match against the Broncos after being appointed to lead the Orchids through to the 2026 World Cup.

Norris, who guided the Maroons to an 18-14 win against NSW last Thursday to avoid an Origin series whitewash, first took charge of the PNG Orchids in last year's Pacific Cup against Australia and New Zealand.

While the campaign presented challenges, with the Orchids being relegated to the Pacific Bowl after losing to Samoa, the PNGRFL view Norris's re-appointment as a decisive move to strengthen the future of women’s rugby league in PNG.

Norris will begin preparations for the Pacific Championships and RLWC2026 almost immediately with PNG to play the Australian Defence Force in Port Moresby on June 15 and the Broncos on June 22 in Brisbane.

PNGRFL CEO Stanley Hondina said the appointment of Norris was part of a bold, long-term strategy that prioritises consistency, development, and the belief that building a world-class team takes time, trust and vision.

“We understand the public’s expectations, and we share them. But we also know that real progress comes from stability and a clear plan," Hondina said.

"Tahnee brings exceptional international experience, a deep understanding of our players, and a renewed determination to elevate the Orchids to new heights.”

The re-appointment of Norris is part of a broader strategy that includes:

  • strengthening domestic competitions;
  • mentoring local coaches through the ‘Wan Haus’ initiative, and;
  • preparing the Orchids for a strong showing at the 2025 Pacific Championships and RLWC2026.

Hondina said the appointment of Norris reflected a commitment to growth over quick fixes.

“This is not just about one coach - it’s about building a system that lasts,” Hondina said.

"Tahnee’s commitment to PNG rugby league, her work ethic, and her vision for the Orchids align with our mission to develop elite talent and compete with the best in the world.”

Norris, who is currently in Papua New Guinea for the Santos Cup Football Conference, said she was energised by the opportunity.

“I’m grateful for the trust placed in me and excited to continue this journey with the Orchids," Norris said. "We’ve laid the groundwork, and now it’s time to build something truly special.”

Santos PNG Orchids Chairlady Celestine Ove congratulated Tahnee Norris on her extended appointment and added that the reappointment would allow Norris to pass on her wealth of experience and skills to the national coaching staff, trainers, and PNGRFL staff.

PNGRFL is confident that with the right support, leadership, and belief, the Santos PNG Orchids will rise to meet the moment - and make PNG proud on the global stage.

The Santos PNG Orchids and the PNG LNG Kumuls will compete in the 2025 Pacific Bowl Championships later in the year.
