The Australian Rugby League Commission has announced the Chief Executive Officer of Lloyds International, Mr Dave Smith, as its new Chief Executive.
ARLC Chairman, Mr John Grant, said today that the appointment comes at the end of a deliberate and thorough process in which the only priority has been getting the right person to build on the transformational momentum that has developed across the game:
“This is a person who knows business, who knows how to lead, who loves sport, who is culturally suited to our game and who has a very strong sense of community.
“We’ve spent a lot of time talking with Dave and I can tell you that we are certain he will do a fantastic job for our game.”
Mr Smith currently heads an International Banking Division spanning 10 countries and employing over 1500 staff.
He is a Welshman who, nine years ago, moved with his young family to Australia and ultimately has had responsibility for managing Lloyds International with International assets of AUD $50 billion.
A keen sportsman, his career has included service in the British Army and senior positions with global banking organisations.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the Rugby League family,” he said today.
“I feel a real sense of excitement and duty in taking on the Chief Executive role at such an exciting point for the game and the NRL.
“During the recruitment process I have had a lot of opportunity to meet with each of the Commissioners to understand their different perspectives.
“Clearly they have impressed me and they left me in no doubt about their collegiate commitment to getting things done and seeing things through.
“I decided 18 months ago to change direction and to look for opportunities in sports management and have been waiting for the right opportunity.
“This role has everything I could want and I am really looking forward to getting started.
“It is a chance to make a real difference at a time when Rugby League is looking to grow to a new level.
“I have some relevant skills in building and driving business outcomes and I look forward to working with the Clubs, the players, the fans and all stakeholders.”
Mr Smith remains employed by Lloyds International and will commence with the NRL on February 1.
“It is inevitable that when you attract a candidate of this quality that it will take a little time for them to complete their current obligations,” Mr Grant said.
“In the meantime Shane Mattiske will continue to act as Interim Chief Executive as he has done outstandingly well over the past five months.
“Shane will continue to play an important role in the game.”
