NRL.com and NRL Referees Elite Performance Manager Daniel Anderson have worked together to bring you five videos to demonstrate the 2013 Laws and Interpretations of the game.

Daniel Anderson explains; the tackle, obstruction, grounding the ball, video referee and shoulder charge rules, while talking you through the referee decision making process with multiple examples of each incident.

Please note: The 2013 NRL season will be adjudicated in accordance with the current ‘The  Australian Rugby League Laws of the Game and notes on the laws’ with specific interpretations for NRL.

THE TACKLE

There are over 300 contested tackles in every NRL game, Anderson has highlighted different methods that impede the immediate release of the player in possession and could result in a penalty.

The video embedded in this article demonstrates these examples and shows why they will be penalised.

a. Flop onto the player in possession who is grounded

b. Working the player in possession

c. Leg pulls

d. Leaving or placing the hands or arms on the ball or the arms of the player in possession once the tackle is complete

e. Spinning on the player in possession once the tackle is complete

f. Defenders ‘peeling off’ the player in possession^

g. Climbing over the player in possession once the tackle is complete

h. Crowding the player in possession once the tackle is complete using their knees, arms or body

i. Pulls the player in possession to the ground once the tackle is complete.

^ In a three man tackle the movement shall either be 2 defenders then 1 defender or 1 defender then 2 defenders but not one at a time.
