Trailblazing Brisbane Broncos back-rower Matt Gillett revealed his side had been building towards their phenomenal 32-6 win over the Knights in Newcastle.
Snapping a two-game losing streak in style, the Broncos have managed to get their season back on track in impressive fashion two weeks out from Representative Round – where a host of Broncos players are expected to line-up.
Motivated by the sour taste in their mouth following their tough loss to the Titans last weekend, Gillett believes his club will get a good confidence boost from the latest efforts – the potential Australian representative crediting the Broncos defence for their win.
"We've been building towards a performance like that. It was a tough loss last weekend and also against the Roosters [in Round 3] and obviously we didn't show up to play when we played Parramatta and put a little bit of a score on like that [against the Knights] and get a bit of confidence out of it is going to be good for the boys," Gillett told NRL.com.
"I think we defended well. We were under the pump there in that first half and they kept on putting repeat sets on us and we kept on showing up for each other and we kept them to six points which is pretty good to do in the NRL these days."
With a good week of training under the belt, Gillett emphasised the fact that preparation is everything for the Broncos in the grand scheme of the NRL.
"We were all pretty calm and all the boys were pretty happy. You could feel that there was a good mood and a good vibe in the dressing sheds before the game. You could feel the energy there which is a good thing," Gillett said.
"We all played really well and it goes to show with the scoreline there and all the boys put on a good effort and we all deserve the win and it's good to enjoy it."
While coach Anthony Griffin was happy to worry about the Broncos' next opponents in the Rabbitohs, Gillett was more than happy to compliment South Sydney as competitors.
"There are no easy games coming into the NRL – you can't even pick the winners at this time of the year," Gillett said, resonating with the majority of footy tipsters in 2014.
"It's going to be another tough competition, with obviously their massive forward pack and a massive team across the park."
"We're going to have to do another good job again."
